When I first started taking pictures I would just grab my camera and I would go! The more sessions I started booking, the more I realized how unprepared I was. Here are a few helpful tips that I've picked up along the way and it has helped my sessions go by a lot smoother and easier, for both myself and my clients.
1. Invest in a camera bag!
I know this isn't much of an "helpful tip", but for me it was! I didn't realize how much I needed a bag until my husband surprised me with one. Having a bag allows you to keep your equipment together and organized. This helps prepare for your shoot because you won't have a hard time finding anything. 2. Pack everything the day before!
The day before your session get out everything you need for your shoot. This has helped me a lot because on the day of my sessions, I'm so nervous that the only thing I'm focused on is doing my best!
Make sure to clean your equipment and also bag those "just in case" items. Such as a back up flash, batteries or camera battery. And always make sure that your camera is charged and ready to use the day before. The most unprofessional thing ever is having to cut a session short because your battery is dead.

3. Refresh your memory!
This step is my favorite because I do it often! A week before each of my sessions I look over my notes, practice with my camera and refresh my memory of important things to remember during a shoot. Such as: What kind of shoot I'm doing, how to pose my models, difference between each camera setting and etc.
Again, this is something I do to prep myself. Every session is different, it's important to remind yourself of things you haven't done in a while. For me, it was outdoor sessions. I was so use to working indoor that I forgot about being able to use a reflector or diffuser outside.
4. Communicate with your clients!
It's no better way to prepare yourself for a shoot than to COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR CLIENTS. So many things can go wrong if you don't take this step. In fact I should have made this number one!
Communicating with your clients helps you get a better understanding of what they expect of you and what they expect during their shoot. Talk to them. Any questions or concerns that they have, cover this before the session so you won't waste time during the session going over small details. Ask them what their wearing, what kind of ideas they have in mind. Ask as many questions as needed so you can be prepared for the shoot! This makes your client comfortable with you and also makes you comfortable with them.
5. Don't be discouraged!
My last tip for preparing yourself for a session is to don't be discouraged and just have fun. If your anything like I am, when it comes to each of my sessions I am very hard on myself. Sometimes I stress myself because I want every session to go perfect but of course this won't always happen because things can happen during a session that is out of your control. Just have fun! Don't stress it and do your best, I promise you it'll pay out in the end as long as you follow these 5 steps and also figure out steps that work for YOU!
